My children are still in elementary school so you might wonder why I’m asking myself what items should I save to pass down to my grandchildren?
The other day my youngest daughter and I were cleaning out her closet. Not an easy task, to say the least. We are the exact opposites when it comes to sorting through clothes. I say whatever she doesn’t wear or is a bit too small goes in the throw pile. She insists we save every item and promises she’ll wear them the next season. This we know will never happen. Now her new reason for saving her clothes is that she wants to pass them down to her children. She actually has a bag where she is collecting items for her children. At first that made me laugh, and then I thought to myself, maybe she does have a point.
It made me think of all of the clothes, blankets and dolls my mother saved for my children. In the end, most of the clothes ended up on my stuffed teddy bears and didn’t even make it to my daughters closet. To be fair, I do remember my mom giving me my old baby dresses when my daughters were born. The dresses just seemed too be made of fragile fabrics unlike the soft durable fabrics that are used today. It made me realize that I should think twice before giving away all of my children’s clothing and blankets, and consider saving them for my grandchildren.
“Many kids fashion designers today create what the industry calls heirloom pieces that are designed to be passed down from generation to generation,” explains Laura Yatim, founder of Dashin Fashion Kids Magazine. “Take for example British Designer Rachel Riley’s Heritage Collection designed around the excitement of the Royal Baby which has sold out numerous times at Harrods. In the collection you’ll find the little prince, little princess and little baby print outfits, pram sheets and blankets, and dress up prince and princess outfits with matching dolls and teddy bears. The Heritage collection is perfect to pass down to your grandchildren, sharing with them a moment of history with the birth of the Royal Baby.”
With this in mind I’ve decided to save those special baby clothes, occasion dresses and special outfits. I’ve read the best way to preserve clothes over the years is to thoroughly clean each item, and maintain temperature and humidity control. Another important point is to avoid direct light exposure and do not store in airtight containers. The ideal storage is flat with as few folds as possible and don’t forget to check each item annually.
So now that I’ve decided to save my children’s clothing for the next generation, isn’t this a great excuse to invest in higher-quality designer kids clothes and specialty items? Any excuse to keep me shopping…With my luck my daughters will have lots of boys :- Hopefully their husbands parents will have saved their heirloom items for the grandsons!
